Big Reds Stage Big Rally To Upend Wheeling Central Knights, 38-21

Trailing 21-7 in the third quarter, Parkersburg’s Big Reds came roaring back with 31 straight points to post a 38-21 victory over Wheeling Central Friday night at Stadium Field.
In the first ever meeting between the two teams, the Big Reds saw the three-time defending state champion Maroon Knights jump out to an early lead and were up two touchdowns early in the second half before the home team could get untracked behind the arm and legs of junior quarterback Bryson Singer. Singer threw his second touchdown pass of the game with 6:34 left in the third quarter and added three more scoring runs to lift PHS to its first win of the year.
Singer completed just four of 11 passes for 70 yards but had TD tosses of 20 yards to Carter King and 39 yards to Jordan Martin while rushing for 124 yards (despite losing 40 yards on fumbles and sacks) on 19 carries.
Central, despite being only a Class A school, showed great execution and diversity in the first quarter, finally scoring on its third possession thanks to great field position. The Knights recovered a PHS fumble on the 29 yard line and took just three plays for Jordan Waterhouse to score from 13 yards away with 2:17 on the clock. Eli Tucker kicked the first of his three extra points. Central had 106 yards in total offense in the first period to just 34 for PHS.
The Big Reds tied the score at 7-all thanks to a 36 yard interception return by Jadon Scott that put the ball on the Central 26 yard line. Three plays later Singer hit King for the touchdown with 7:38 left in the half.
Central came right back to take the lead as Waterhouse (who rushed for over 1,300 yards as a junior) broke away for a 23 yard run that put the ball on the PHS 15 after a personal foul penalty was tacked on the end of the play. He then carried to the one yard line and scored two plays later to make it 14-7.
The Knights got a break to start the second half when Singer fumbled the ball away 23 yards behind the line of scrimmage at the Big Red four yard line. Two plays later Waterhouse scored again and Central was up 21-7 with just 1:09 elapsed in the third period.
Things began to turn around with 7:26 on the third quarter clock as Central was whistled for pass interference that gave PHS the ball on the Central 38. Three plays later Singer scrambled and threw a bomb to Martin standing in the end zone and the junior receiver came down with the ball for the touchdown.
After forcing a punt, the Big Reds were back at it again after a holding penalty made them have to go 63 yards with Singer sneaking over from the one with 2:30 on the clock. After some confusion on the extra point, freshman Casey Stanley missed his first PAT of the year and PHS trailed 21-20.
A Justin Waybright fumble recovery got the ball back for the Big Reds after a 20-yard loss forced by Austin Fleming. Two runs by Singer produced the go-ahead touchdown on the last play of the third quarter and Singer found a wide open Jordan Martin on the two-point conversion to make it 28-21.
Early in the fourth quarter PHS tacked on an insurance score as Singer carried out a great fake and found himself virtually all alone up the middle for a 45 yard TD scamper with 9:13 left in the game.
Waybright recovered another fumble, this one forced by Jeffrey Jones, on the Central 17 yard line. But PHS had to settle for a 27 yard field goal by Stanley.
In all Central lost four of five fumbles and had an interception, marking the second week in a row with five turnovers. The Big Reds lost two fumbles.
In addition to his two fumble recoveries, Waybright had a sack and eight tackles. Casey Mahoney also had eight tackles for PHS, which travels to Marietta next Friday.Wheeling Central vs Parkersburg (Sep 11, 2020 at Parkersburg)
